چکیده
Despite significant progress in reducing the global mortality of children that was caused by diarrhea in the last few decades, diarrhea is still one of the most critical childhood diseases in developed and developing countries. Research suggests that factors such as malnutrition can affect the process of diarrhea. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effect of malnutrition and reduced height growth on this issue to reduce mortality due to diarrhea. This study was conducted to determine the nutritional pattern in children hospitalized with gastroenteritis. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, after the ethics committee's approval and obtaining the code of ethics based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, patients with acute gastroenteritis admitted to the Mardaniazar Children's Hospital in Tabriz last year were included. At the beginning of the patient's entry, the study's objectives were explained to the parents of the patients, and after obtaining written informed consent from the parents, information was collected, and clinical examinations of the patients were performed. Recorded information includes: Children's demographic information (including age, gender, weight, height, head circumference, birth rank, and family size); children's nutritional information (including breastfeeding and its duration, formula consumption and its duration, age and type of supplementary feeding, frequency of receiving supplementary feeding, snack consumption, and food consumed in the current diet); and, history of previous hospitalization and reason for hospitalization, history of previous hospitalization with a final diagnosis of gastroenteritis, level of education of parents were recorded. Finally, the nutritional status of children based on gastroenteritis and other related variables was evaluated and analyzed. Results: This study evaluated 300 children under five who were hospitalized due to acute gastroenteritis. The mean age of the children was 16.3 months, and the frequent age group was 7 to 12 months (41%). 60.7% of the children were boys. 18.7% of the patients were under the 5th weight percentile10th weight percein the 5th to 10th. The frequency of exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months was 4.5%, and 38.7% of children received formula up to 6 months. The incidence of acute gastroenteritis during one year in children who were exclusively breastfed up to 6 months was 6 cases per 100 thousand people, and in children who were formula-fed up to 6 months, it was 44 cases per 100 thousand people.
