Evaluation of the therapeutic effects of capsules containing Melissa officinalis on the clinical and electrodiagnostic findings of patients with type 2 diabetes

Abstract

Diabetes is one of the most common metabolic diseases worldwide. Considering the adverse effects of this disease on vital body organs, as well as the high prevalence of central nervous system diseases in diabetic patients, the present study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of Melissa officinalis (MO) capsules on the clinical and electrodiagnostic symptoms of patients with type 2 diabetes. Method: This randomized, controlled, double-blind, interventional clinical trial was conducted on Type 2 diabetic patients referred to Imam Reza Hospital in Tabriz, Iran, from 2022-2023. A total of 60 Type 2 diabetic patients were assigned to two treatment groups with 500 mg MO and placebo. Clinical and electrodiagnostic findings were compared in the two groups. The data was analyzed in SPSS software at a significance level of 0.05. Result: After the intervention, a significant decrease was observed in the fasting blood sugar of participants in the MO group compared to the control group (Z=6.26; P=0.01). The comparison of the mean hemoglobin A1c after the intervention demonstrated no significant difference between the two groups (Z=2.98; P=0.08). electrodiagnostic factors did not differ after the intervention.
