Comparison of hematological parameters in patients with intertrochanteric femoral fracture at the time of corona virus pandemic with before pandemic
Abstract
Today, with the increase in life expectancy in human societies, the importance of taking care of the quality of life of the elderly and improving it has become more prominent. Due to the fact that the composition of blood cells in both osteoporosis and Covid-19 diseases is disturbed, these two diagnoses may be used interchangeably in elderly patients admitted to the orthopedic ward due to intertrochanteric fractures. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between blood parameters in patients with intertrochanteric fracture before and after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Method: The files of 120 patients over 60 years of age due to intertrochanteric fracture and information about 60 patients as a control group including RBC, WBC, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets and NLR, age were extracted and entered into the study. For statistical analysis of data, SPSS software version 23 was used and the mean and standard deviation of each parameter in the study groups were calculated and recorded. Finally, ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests were used to compare the relationship between variables. 0.05> P-Value was considered as a significant level.
Results: The number of lymphocytes in patients admitted before and after Covid-19 pandemic was lower than controls (P-Value <0.05). Also, the number of neutrophils in these patients was higher than the control group, which automatically causes a higher NLR in elderly patients with this type of fracture than controls (P-Value <0.05). There was also no significant difference in blood parameters before and after Covid-19 pandemic (P-Value <0.05).
