Frequency of different blood groups and transfusion rate in traumatic patients in relation to type of trauma and surgery

Abstract

Trauma patients admitting to health centers are increasing as a result of growing population and increasing number of vehicles, leading to higher rates of transfusion requirement. Blood loss is the second cause of death in these patients, and considering the importance of transfusion in such cases, we conducted this study to evaluate the relationship between blood groups and transfusion requirements. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 315 trauma patiens who were refered to Shohada hospital of Tabriz during 2021. Data on age, sex, blood group typing, weight, trauma type, ASA clas, underlying conditions, transfusion requirement, type and number of transufion products required, and possible complications were collected and statistically analyzed. Results: In this study, a total of 315 trauma patients were evaluated. Mean age of the patients were equal to 52.51 years and 53% of the patients were male. 39% of the patients had A blood group and 93% had Rh positive blod type. Traumatic injuries happened more in A blood type group and 47% of all traumas was femoral fracture. No statistically important difference was found regarding ABO blood types and traumatic events. Statistically higher volumes of RBCs were used in patients with femoral fracture (p=0.007). Traumatic events happened statistically higher in patients with underlying diseases and Rh positive blood type.
