Comparison of efficacy of Tacrolimus %0.03 ointment and Mometasone ointment in pediatric Atopic Dermatitis

Abstract

The objective of this study was to Comparison of efficacy of Tacrolimus %0.03 ointment and Mometasone ointment in pediatric Atopic Dermatitis. Method & material: In this randomized, double-blind, clinical trial, 30 patients aged 2 to 10 years with atopic dermatitis (AD) were randomly allocated in two groups and treated with either tacrolimus 0.03% ointment or Mometasone ointment, twice a day for 6 weeks. Responses to treatment were compared in weeks 3 and 6 by using SCORAD. Results: Fifteen patients in tacrolimus group and 15 in Mometasone group completed the trial. Mean SCORAD score in the group of patients receiving tacrolimus 0.03% ointment in weeks 0, 3, 6 were 49.214.07, 34.214.5, 24.519.3 (P=0.001). Mean SCORAD score in the group of patients receiving mometasone ointment in weeks 0, 3, 6 were 49.0310.6, 22.218.7, 11.3314.3 (P=0.001). However, in the third week of treatment, no significant difference was found in the mean SCORAD score of the two groups (P=0.061), but the reduction in SCORAD after 6 weeks in in the group of patients receiving mometasone was significantly higher than tacrolimus 0.03% ointment group (P=0.043). The frequency of treatment-induced pruritus and Pain, exacerbation of lesions after treatment, dermatitis and infection was similar in both groups but burning sensation was more observed in the tacrolimus 0.03% ointment group (P=0/05).
