Some of Maternal Factors Influencing Low Birth Weight in Women attending in Medical and Teaching Centers affiliated with Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2004- 2005.

چکیده
Abstract: Background: Low birth weight (LBW) is one of the main cause of mortality in neonates. In order to identify maternal factors influencing low birth weight, a descriptive cross –sectional study was lunched. The purpose of this study was to identify some of maternal factors influencing low birth weight in women attending in teaching centers affiliated with Iran University of medical sciences in 2004 -2005. Maternal and Methods: It was a descriptive cross –sectional study and method of sampling was multi –stage, that is , two out of four medical teaching centers were chose and then sample size was determined in relevance to clients to selected centers and sampling was performed continually until estimated sample size that was accounted 813 person. Study took place in postpartum wards of medical teaching centers affiliated with Iran University of medical sciences. Results: According to the results, based on the total newborns, 50.92% were boys, 49.08% were girls and 15.5% was found to be low birth weight. The maternal factors significantly associated with low birth weight, including preeclampsia (p=0.000), primiparity (p=0.006) and height (p=0.021). Conclusion: In multiple logistic regression analysis, preeclampsia in pregnancy, was most risky factor for low birth weight. These data suggest that for decreasing of low birth weight and improving of birth weight, more attention and special care adopt to high risk mothers specially mothers who are experiencing first pregnancy or suffering from preeclampsia.
