Incidence and Prevalence of diabetes type 1: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes is a disease group characterized by high blood
glucose levels due to impaired insulin production or activity. Type 1 diabetes
is known as insulin-dependent diabetes and may be observed in all age
groups; however, higher prevalence has been reported in children and
young individuals. These patients are unable to produce sufficient insulin
and includes 5-10% of whole diabetic population. In this type of diabetes βcell destruction is occurred in Langerhans islets which causes no insulin
secretion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the global incidence and
prevalence of type 1 diabetes mellitus.
Materials and Methods: In this study the systematic review of the
references was performed for global incidence and prevalence evaluation
of type 1 diabetes mellitus. English papers were obtained from web of
science (web of knowledge) google scholar, proquest, ovid, scopus, science
direct and medline data bases from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 2019
and were screened based on title, abstract and whole document and the
studies with our inclusion criteria were included in this study.
Results: Our results indicated a global statistically significant 15/100000
and 9.5% incidence and prevalence, respectively.
