Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of phenytoin 2% on prevention of fistula formation after cleft palate surgery. Methods and materials: In a case/control study, children with cleft palate who underwent surgery were investigated in two groups. One group received a puff of phenytoin spray for at least four weeks and other group did not receive any spray. Patients were evaluated for fistula formation after cleft palate surgery. Results: eighty children were received phenytoin spray and 80 were controls. Mean age of children at surgery time were 11.42±1.30 months in case group and 11.08±1.25 months in control group. Thirty nine children in case group and 37 children in control group were male. Six children in the group treated with phenytoin spray and 15 children in the control group had fistula during follow up. There was a significant difference between groups in term of fistula formation after cleft palate surgery.
