Study the effects of probiotic supplementation on metabolic parameters and level of androgens in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a randomized double-blind, clinical trial
چکیده
Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinopathy among women of childbearing age and is one of the most important causes of infertility. Probiotics are living microorganisms that, if used in humans or animals, exert beneficial effects on the Study the effects of probiotic supplementation on metabolic parameters and level of androgens in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a randomized double-blind, clinical trial
host's health by affecting the body's microbial flora.
Purpose: Study the effects of probiotic supplementation on metabolic parameters and level of androgens in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a randomized double-blind, clinical trial
Materials and Methods: This is a double blind randomized clinical trial that was performed on 84 patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (18-45 years). Patients were randomly divided into two groups and received probiotic (Saccharomyces boulardii) and placebo for 6 months. Anthropometric indices (BMI, waist circumference, and abdominal circumference) were measured at baseline and at the end of week 12 for all patients. In each group, fasting blood samples were collected before the intervention and at the end of the intervention to measure FBS. Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and testosterone were obtained. SPSS software was used for data analysis.
Results: Probiotic supplementation resulted in a significant decrease in testosterone hormone (p = 0.0029) and DHEA-S with p = 0.0031, in contrast, no statistically significant difference was observed in the BMI and FBS parameters measured in theprobiotic group. Also no statistically significant difference was observed in placebo group before and after the placebo.
Conclusion: Overall, however, we found that probiotic supplementation of Saccharomyces boulardii in PCOS women for 12 weeks had not significant and favorable effects on weight loss and BMI, FBS, but my result showed that testosterone and dihydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels significantly deacresed after probiotic use, and Saccharomyces boulardii probiotics can be used in addition to the routine treatments used to treat PCOS patients to improve their condition.
