Moral Sensitivity and its Relationship with Hand Hygiene Knowledge, Perception and Practices for Emergency Nurses of Teaching Hospitals in Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, 2018

Abstract:
Introduction: Nurses face several ethical challenges throughout their careers and moral sensitivity helps to make the right decisions and solve these ethical problems in clinical situations. Hand hygiene is one of the clinical situations that its compliance lead to prevention and control of health care associated infections and it plays an important role in promoting the safety of clients and preserving resources (human, financial) in the society. The aim of this study was to determine the moral sensitivity and its correlation with knowledge, perception and performance of hand hygiene among emergency nurses of teaching Hospitals in Tabriz University of Medical Sciences.
Materials and Methods: In a correlational descriptive- cross-sectional study, 201 emergency nurses by using random sampling method were selected. To collect the information a questionnaire consisting of five parts, demographic characteristics, moral sensitivity questionnaire, hand hygiene knowledge questionnaire for Health-Care Workers, Perception Survey for Health-Care Workers questionnaire and hand Hygiene performance questionnaire was used. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire, was determined by using test-retest. The collected data were analyzed by spss version 13 and descriptive statistics, Pierson correlation test, one-way ANOVA and independent t-test.
Results: The average score achieved for the moral sensitivity of the emergency nurses in this study was 139.83± 13.61, which was in the moderate range. The average score achieved for the hand hygiene knowledge of the emergency nurses in this study was 16.79± 3.26, which was in the moderate range. The average score achieved for the hand hygiene perception of the emergency nurses in this study was 81.03± 14.14, which was in the good range. The average score achieved for the hand hygiene performance of the emergency nurses in this study was65.25± 5.33, which was in the good range was. There was a statistically significant correlation between nurses ' moral sensitivity and hand hygiene perception ( p=0.04, r=0.13) Also, there was a statistically significant correlation between the hand hygiene knowledge of nurses with hand hygiene perception ( p=0.02, r=0.15). Between the hand hygiene knowledge in nurses with variables of working hours per month ( p=0.03, r= -0.19) and average of overtime per month ( p=0.02, r= -0.21) a statistically significant correlation was observed. Among nurses ' hand hygiene knowledge in hospitals (p=0.001) and various emergencies (p=0.001) were observed statistically significant difference. Also, there was a statistically significant difference between the hand hygiene performance and average of overtime per month (p=0.008).
Conclusions: According to the findings, the mean of moral sensitivity and hand hygiene knowledge of the emergency nurses in this study was moderate. Therefore, it seems that changes in educational processes and attention to the subject of moral sensitivity and hand hygiene knowledge in training of employees are essential
