چکیده
Introduction: Denture stomatitis is a chronic inflammation of mucous membrane supporting the movable prostheses. Oral candidiasis is one of the most prevalent opportunistic fungal infections in the oral cavity, caused by yeast-like fungal microorganism termed candida. The current view is that the etiology of denture stomatitis is multifactorial, candida infection is the predominant associated etiological factors for denture stomatitis at recent years, some studies reported the microbial resistance of candida specie against antifungal agents. Since the antimicrobial effects of grape seed extract have been proven on some bacterial species and candida albicans, this study was aimed to compare the antifungal effect of grape seed extract with common antifungal agents, nistatin. Objective: Comparison of antifungal effects of grape seed extract with nystatin on denture stomatitis. Materials & Methods: This randomised clinical trial study was performed on  patients with denture stomatitis (type II). They were randomly divided into two groups while members of each group were given either nystatin mouth wash IU Tid or grape seed extract mouthwash Tid for days. The patients were visited on days and  In each visit, the length and width of erythema were measured using a digital calliper. Data were analysed by SPSS  and descriptive statistical methods (Mean ± SEM) and repeated measures ANOVA. p< was considered statistically significant. Results: Our results suggest that on the twentieth day of treatment the impact of grape seed extract mouthwash on reducing the length and width of erythema was slightly more than nystatin but, there were no statistically significant differences in healing time between the two groups. Conclusion: The results show that grape seed extract mouth wash could be effective on the treatment of denture stomatitis and could be a good alternative to nystatin .
