Evaluation of Results of fixation of calcaneal fracture with transarticular pin & plate without bone graft

Abstract

In this study we aim to evaluate the results of fixation of calcaneal fracture with transarticular pin & plate without bone graft with non-surgical treatment. Methods: In this case-control study, 152 calcaneal fractures in 147 patients including 47 in non-surgical group and 105 in surgical group were evaluated. Patients were followed for 45.96±26.99 months in surgery group and for 50.36±27.23 months in non-surgery group. Radiographies were taken and all patients completed Foot and ankle disability index (FADI) and American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) standard questionnaires. Results: Both groups were comparable regarding age, gender and co-morbidities. Surgery group compared to non-surgery group had significantly higher FADI score (76.24±16.71 vs. 59.46±12.93, p<0.001), higher AOFAS score (69.37±16.62 vs. 54.57±12.70, p<0.001) and higher subtalar motion (28.77±16.11 vs. 18.72±14.00, p<0.001). In surgery group, infection occurred in 1.9%, wound dehiscence in 5.7% and loss of reduction in 14.3% of patients. Diabetes mellitus was significantly higher in cases with complication compared to no complications (27.8% vs. 3.6%, p=0.001).
