Effect of Rosemary on sore throat after general anesthesia with tracheal intubation

Abstract

Sore throat after surgery is an unpleasant complication in patients after general anesthesia with tracheal intubation.The incidence of this complication is 21-65%. The effect of rosemary has not yet been studied on sore throat after tracheal intubation. So, we decided to study the preemptive effect of Rosemary on sore throat after tracheal intubation. Methods: 70 Patients will be divided to 2 groups by VAS method; study and control groups after signing informed consent for controlling of sore throat due to surgery. In study group an sterilized gauze impregnated with 10 cc of Rosemary herbal extract, packaged in the patient's throat, followed by intubation. Surgeon and anesthesia specialized will be blind to study. In control group the drug won't be given. The sore throat severity will be measured by VAS in the recovery first and then it will be repeated 2-6-24 hours after consciousness. Results:The results show that, although the mean of sore throat severity in the sixth and twenty fourth hours after surgery werw lower in patients who had received rosemary, this difference was not significant. No side-effects of rosemary were reported.
