Epidemiology of AIDS and HIV infection in East Azerbaijan province (2004 -2014) and present strategies to improve management of Identification and Control of it
Abstract
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate HIV patient’s documents to identify useful solution for diagnosis, treatment and patients care in East Azarbaijan province.
Methods: This study was a descriptive-analytic study in which the purpose group involved all of the patients with AIDS or HIV positive who were identified or reported in Health care centers or treatment affiliated to Tabriz University of Medical University from 2004 to 2014. Data collection was based on research questionnaire development to measure disease transmit way (include all possible way), diagnosis date, date of beginning of treatment and death date from 291 patients. Quantitative variables were reported by mean (SD) and Chi-square test was used to investigate the effective factors. Data management and analysis were performed using STATA 11.
Results: Mean (SD) age study sample was 39(±8.5). Study results showed that %89.9 male, 56.6% up to 40 aged and 70% of them had elementary and high school. The most common method of transmission was common syringe with 47.9%. 18.7% and 45.7% had co-infection with hepatitis B and C, respectively. In this study, 29% of patients had drug efficacy (increased CD4 count), As this increase for age group less or equal 39 and for age group more than 40 were 34.5% and 22%, respectively. The median follow-up time patients after starting drug consumption until first count observation of CD4 (500 or higher) were 33 months.
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, the highest prevalence of AIDS was observed in men over 40 years of age, in primary and low education in Tabriz and Maragheh cities, and due to the proper effectiveness of anti-retroviral drugs on improving the survival of patients ( Increased CD4) are needed to ensure that patients are given access to and adherence to antiretroviral drugs, and also due to achieve program goals, health system have had follow up and active supervisor on patient care and treatment.
