Comparison of the effect of two types of antioxidants on the shear bond of bleached enamel to composite
Abstract
Introduction
Bleaching is an effective conservative method for preserving the teeth while discoloration treatment but decreases the bond strength of bleached enamel and composite resin for 24 hours to 4 weeks. Various methods have been proposed to address this problem such as industrial and natural antioxidants. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of the antioxidant properties of hydroalcoholic extract of sunflower and sodium ascorbate on the shear bond strength of bleached enamel to composite resin.
Method
48 Healthy human-extracted anterior teeth were used for this in-vitro study. The teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups of 12 numbers: Group 1: No bleaching and no use of antioxidants(O) Group 2: Bleaching and no use of antioxidants(B) Group 3: Bleaching and use of sodium ascorbate 10%(BA) group 4: Bleaching and using hydroalcoholic extract of sunflower on each sample(BS). After curing the composite, the shear strength of the samples was measured in megapascals, and ANOVA and post hoc tests were used to compare the average bond strength among the groups and to compare two groups. The significance level in all tests will be less than 5%.
Results
The assumption of normality for the response variable (bond strength) was met in all four study groups (p-value > 0.05). Group O has the strongest bonds, measuring 46.09 ± 14.6, following by group BS has at 40.38 ± 25.77. Group BA exhibited an average bond strength of 30.29 ± 5.04. Group B showed the lowest bond strength, as indicated by its value of 13.23 ± 7.17. The statistical difference in mean bond strength among the four study groups was significant by one-way ANOVA (p-value < 0.001).
Conclusion
Using 10% sodium ascorbate antioxidant and hydroalcoholic extract of sunflower seeds improves SBS. However, according to our study, the improvement in SBS in the group treated with sunflower seed extract is comparable to that in the group without bleaching.
