Investigating the effect of turmeric on major depressive disorder: a randomized clinical trial

Abstract
Introduction: Major depressive disorder (MDD), as one of the common, chronic and often neglected disorders in primary medical care, has serious effects on people's mental and physical health, which must be managed with innovative and effective methods. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of turmeric on major depressive disorder: a randomized clinical trial.Methods and materials: This study was a randomized clinical trial and was conducted cross-sectionally at the psychiatry clinic of Imam Reza Hospital and Sheikh Al Rais Clinic. The study population was divided into two control groups (50 people) and intervention (57 people) by block randomization method. The control group received routine depression treatment with placebo and the intervention group received routine depression treatment with curcumin 500 mg, 2 tablet daily for 2 months (8 weeks). results: According to the results, the mean scores of Hamilton in both the control and intervention groups have decreased, which is significant. This shows that the patients in both groups have received proper treatment and are improving. The Hamilton scores of the intervention group have decreased more than the control group, which is significant based on the results of statistical tests.Conclusion: In this study, the effect of curcumin on the recovery of patient with deppresive disorder was investigated.the results indicate that the use of curcumin along with the routine treatment of GAD is more effective than not receiving it. Taking curcumin for 2 months caused a significant decrease in Hamilton’s scores.
