Developing the performance indicators for nursing education institutions
Abstract
Abstract:
Introduction: Key indicators of educational performance are statistics that describe the main aspects of the school and provide the possibility of evaluating and monitoring the school, faculty members, programs and students.
Objective: To design performance indicators for nursing education institutions in a bacculerate level
Method: The present study is a "Health System Research" and was done to achieve four specific goals. To implement the first objective, the desired charecteristics for the indicators’ set were determined, and then four focus groups discussions with nursing students of different levels, one focus group discussion with nurses, and seven individual interviews with faculty members and nursing managers were conducted. Also, a form was designed in Google Forms, and the responses of 91 people from different stakeholders of a nursing school were collected. By conducting a literature review, existing performance indicators were identified. In the second objective, the Donabedian framework was adapted in undergraduate nursing education with the participation of 13 nursing professionals in a modified Delphi study with three rounds. In the third objective, indicators were evaluated with the participation of nursing board members against content validity and feasibility criteria. Then, with the help of nursing undergraduate curriculum, and four balanced scorecard approaches, indicators were classified. In the fourth goal, by preparing a content for each indicator, it was tried to fully consider the issues related to the interpretation and reporting of indicators.
Results: After the implementation of the Delphi, the elements of Donabedian's model in the structure component (staff, equipment, guidlines, resources and facilities, individual and demographic characteristics of students), in the process component (communication, education, evaluation, cooperation, and consultation), and in the outcome component (production of nursing knowledge, nursing image, results related to alumni, results related to students, performance of affiliated medical centers, results of evaluations and accreditations and satisfaction) was obtained. Finally, 18 indicators were selected to measure the performance of nursing education institutions, which were placed in the three components of structure (5 indicators), process (3 indicators) and outcome (10 indicators) according to the Donabedian model.
Conclusion: A number of appropriate indicators were identified and designed to measure the performance of nursing education institutions at the undergraduate level, to collect data for some of these indicators, the design of appropriate tools and infrastructure can be considered
