Evaluation of Survivin protein gene expression in patients with recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL)

Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL) refers to 3 or more clinical pregnancies lost before the 20th week of pregnancy after LMP in humans. According to this definition, RPL occurs in 1-2% of all pregnancies worldwide. Apoptosis or programmed cell death is a normal developmental process. Because the regulation of cell proliferation and death is necessary for a successful pregnancy, then regulated apoptosis is normal in a pregnancy. Survivin promoter is a member of the programmed cell growth enabler (IAP) family, which is encoded in humans by the baculovirus gene for apoptosis (BIRC5). The aim of this study is to investigate the expression level of Survivin gene and its cultured level in order to investigate apoptotic changes in patients with early induced abortions (RPL).
Methods: Blood samples were taken from 30 pregnant women with recurrent miscarriage (RPL) and 30 pregnant women matched in terms of gestational age. The expression level of the studied genes was evaluated using Real Time-PCR technique. Western blotting technique was also used to check survivin protein level.
Results: Compared to the control group, in the group of patients with recurrent miscarriage, we had a significant decrease in survivin gene expression and protein expression.
