Abstract:
Objective: Tooth loss is one of the most common oral and dental diseases in the population, which greatly affects the quality of life. Dental implants have become a standard procedure in oral rehabilitation. However, implant failure still occurs, especially in patients with poor osseocompatibility. Recent research has focused on the use of melatonin as an alternative grafting agent. Melatonin can target the overall process of bone regeneration and promote osseointegration. Topical application of melatonin plays an essential role in bone regeneration and can reduce periodontal bone loss. Currently, the effect of melatonin in inducing bone formation has been investigated in different clinical and laboratory conditions; Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the effect of topical use of melatonin along with bone grafts in improving osteogenesis in the form of a systematic review.
Materials and methods: A systematic literature search was done from 1970 to December 2023 using PubMed following PRISMA guidelines. A structured search was performed to identify in-vivo and in-vitro studies. After screening the articles by title and abstract, 24 studies were included.
Results: The included studies were animal/human in-vivo studies or in-vitro studies. In total, 87.5% of the studies reported better outcomes in comparison with the control groups.
Conclusion: Locally administered melatonin may stimulate bone healing in surgical bone defects and enhance peri-implant bone response.
