The effect of using multimedia training package on the knowledge and attitude of nursing students in the field of acute pain management in emergency departments
Abstract
Abstract
Objective: Nurses have an essencial role in evaluating and managing patients' pain during hospitalization, and they constantly have to make decisions about patient’s pain management. Lack of proper pain management has many complications in different dimensions of the patient's life and may be caused by limited attention to pain management in nursing curricula.
Methodology: This study was a quasi-experimental type that was conducted in Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in 1401. The statistical population was nursing students of this university and the sample size in this study was 80 students. In order to improve the students' knowledge and attitude, educational intervention with a multimedia educational package was carried out in the form of a two-day workshop. The tools used in this study were two questionnaires of knowledge and attitude towards pain, whose validity was checked and confirmed using content validity and their reliability using internal correlation coefficient measurement method which were completed by students at three times, before, after and 4 weeks after the intervention. Then the data was analyzed by spss software version 24.
Results: 80 students with an average age of 23.17±2.46 participated in this study. There were 46.3 men and 53.7 women, all of whom were studying in the seventh semester.. The results show that the knowledge score of the majority of students (66 people, 82.4%) in the field of acute pain before the intervention was at a poor level. And the attitude score of the majority of students (69 people, 86.3%) in the field of acute pain before the intervention was at an average level. Due to the normal distribution of the data, the paired t-test was used to compare the average scores of attitude and knowledge of each pretest and posttest. The results of the paired t-test showed that Their average knowledge in the field of acute pain increased by 13.04 units after using the multimedia training package compared to before the intervention, which is statistically significant (P=0.001). . Also, the average attitude of students in the field of acute pain after using the multimedia training package has increased by 1.58 units, which is statistically significant (P=0.038). ). These results were examined one month later and were still stable and significant. To investigate the relationship between the level of knowledge and attitude, Pearson's correlation coefficient test was performed, and the results of Pearson's correlation coefficient showed that knowledge 1 month later had a positive and significant relationship with nursing students' attitude 1 month later. To determine the relationship between the knowledge and attitude of nursing students with their demographic characteristics, univariate and multivariate regression analysis was used. Data analysis was done at a significance level of 0.05. The results of the covariance analysis test to compare the knowledge and attitude scores of students with gender and student work experience with a significance level greater than 0.05 showed that between girls and boys and with student work experience. And without a student's work experience, there is no significant difference in the scores of knowledge and attitude after the test and after the test one month later.
Conclusion: The results of this study show that providing a multimedia educational package can change the knowledge and attitude of nursing students in the emergency department, which is the first line of contact with patients. Thus, according to what was mentioned in the sources and texts of this thesis, correct pain management can eliminate the negative effects of the consequences of pain. It is hoped that such educational programs will be used to increase the knowledge and attitude of students.
