Effect of Ginger (Zingiber officinal) on the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting after middle ear surgeries
Abstract
Surgeries performed on the middle ear increase the rate of postoperative nausea and vomiting through various mechanisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ginger on reducing or possibly eliminating nausea and vomiting after middle ear surgery under general anesthesia.
Materials and Methods: This study is a clinical trial that was conducted during 2019 in Imam Reza Hospital. A total of 80 patients were randomly admitted to one of the two study groups. Patients in group G received four ginger capsules (Zintoma, Isfahan Goldaru, Iran), each capsule containing 250 mg of ginger powder. For homogenization with Plaspo capsules, gelatin capsules with mint flavor are impregnated. 1 hour before the operation, patients took the capsules with 30 ml of water. Patients were asked about PONV immediately after surgery and at PACU at intervals of 1,2,4,6,6,12,24 and 48 hours after surgery. The results were compared between the two groups.
Results: The results showed that preventive use of Zanhbil to prevent nausea and vomiting after middle ear surgery at all times was significantly better than placebo (p <0.05); This means that ginger extract or Zingiber officinal is useful and effective in preventing nausea and vomiting and can be used as a low-harm drug.
