Comparison of serum CRP and ESR levels in acute phase and after remission in hospitalized patients with bipolar disorder

Abstract

Most patients with bipolar disorders come for treatment during a depressive episode, and for this reason, the correct diagnosis of this disease is often delayed for about 10 years, and it was found that the average time to receive the first treatment, according to bipolar disorders, is about 10 years. is. This delay in diagnosis often leads to unfavorable results, patients do not receive appropriate treatment to relieve symptoms and may even receive treatments that cause their symptoms to worsen, and in this way, patients continue inappropriate behaviors that are destructive to themselves and their loved ones. The current study aims to compare serum levels of CRP, and ESR in patients with bipolar mood disorders before recovery and after recovery. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study after receiving permission from the ethics committee examined patients with mood disorders admitted to Razi Hospital in Tabriz in 2022. In this study, all patients with bipolar mood disorders during a period of 6 months who are hospitalized in Razi Hospital were the emergency department and inpatient departments and examination of the files of patients with The diagnosis that they were hospitalized in 2022 chosen, they entered the study. At the beginning of the admission of the patients, along with sending the blood sample, a blood sample was also sent to the patients to check CRP, and ESR. Also, these tests were checked after treating the patients and visiting the clinic for other tests if needed. Results: In this cross-sectional study, 100 patients with bipolar disorder were examined. The average age of the patients was 39.22± 11.94 years, the minimum age was 16 years and the maximum age was 70 years. The average duration of the disease was 2.58 ± 1.58 months, the minimum duration of the disease was 1 week and the maximum was 7 months. The average ESR level of patients in the acute phase of the disease was 13.47 ± 10.35 mm/Hr with a median of 11.50 mm/Hr, the lowest ESR level was 3 mm/Hr and the highest was 57 mm/Hr. Also, there was no difference between the gender of patients in terms of ESR level (p=0.183). 97% of patients in the acute phase of the disease and 98% in the discharge time had negative CRP. The average ESR level of the patients at the time of discharge was 29.8 ± 6.13 mm/Hr with a median of 7 mm/Hr, the lowest ESR level was 1 mm/Hr and the highest was 42 mm/Hr. Comparing the average ESR in the acute phase of the disease with the time of discharge showed that the ESR values of the patients decreased significantly by 5.18 units (p=0.001).
