Correlation of serum levels of oxidative and inflammatory stress factors with cognitive findings in patients with multiple sclerosis
Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum levels of oxidative and inflammatory stress factors and cognitive findings in patients with multiple sclerosis. can be manifested by a wide range of symptoms such as cognitive impairment (CI). Oxidative stress (OXS) is the main basis of MS pathogenesis.
Metod Material:
The articles and documents obtained from the search were entered into the statistical community through several stages in terms of titles, abstracts and screening text and final studies that had entry criteria.
Results:
A total of 1609 records were identified from four different databases. First, 501 duplicate records were removed, then 1088 studies were removed through screening. Among the remaining 20 studies, the full text was assessed for eligibility, and 10 studies were excluded because 7 studies lacked markers of oxidative stress or inflammation. 2 studies did not assess correlations. and 1 study had no cognitive outcomes, hence, 10 studies were included in this systematic review. Ten studies, including 8 cross-sectional studies, 1 case-control study, and 1 cohort study, were published between 2006 and 2023. From the included studies, a total of 552 participants in the age range of 20 to 58 years were identified. Studies were conducted from Iran (n=2), Turkey (n=2), Germany (n=2), Jordan, Egypt, Italy and Bulgaria (1 for each). Details of the characteristics of the studies are presented in Table 1, and the results of the risk of bias assessment are presented in Table 2. The main sources of bias were the detailed description of patients and settings.
