Abstract
Abstract Introduction: Fatigue in cancer survivors is an unpleasant experience that can have extensive negative effects on their quality of life and physical activity. Also, past studies have shown that energy management is particularly important for reducing fatigue, improving quality of life and physical activity. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two methods of individual and multimedia training in relation to energy management on fatigue, physical activity and quality of life of cancer survivors referred to Shahid Ghazi Center in Tabriz in 2018.Methods: This research was a semi-experimental study with the participation of 60 cancer survivors (gastric, colorectal, lung and breast cancer) referred to Shahid Ghazi Oncology Center who were selected by convenience sampling method and randomly assigned to two groups of individual education and Multimedia training (30 patients in each group). In this research, the demographic and disease-related characteristics checklist, the cancer fatigue questionnaire, the international standard physical activity short form questionnaire and the World Health Organization quality of life questionnaire were used. In the individual training group, the patients learned energy management methods and effective solutions during two face-to-face training sessions by the researcher, and at the end, a designed educational booklet covering all topics was provided to the patient. Energy management methods and effective solutions were taught to the patients of the multimedia training group by an application "Energy Management of Cancer Patients". After two months, fatigue, physical activity, and quality of life questionnaires were completed by both groups in person or by phone. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS version 22 software and using confirmatory and inferential statistics (chi-square test, independent t, paired t and ANCOVA test). For all statistical analyses, a significance level of less than 0.05 was considered.Findings: The statistical analysis results showed that the two study groups were homogeneous in terms of demographic variables and had no significant difference (p > 0.05). The study results showed that the average score of fatigue, physical activity and quality of life between the two groups before the intervention had no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05), while after the intervention the average score of fatigue and quality of life had a statistically significant difference. had (p < 0.001). Also, the results of covariance analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the average scores of fatigue, physical activity and quality of life after removing the pre-test effect between the two multimedia training groups and the individual training group (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Overall, the results showed that the effectiveness of the multimedia training method in relation to energy management on fatigue, activity and quality of life is more than the individual training method, which due to the easy access to the multimedia training method without the spatial and temporal limitation of this educational method is suggested.
