Validation of Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy or NDDI-E in screening Depression in Epileptic patients in epileptic outpatient clinic
Abstract
Epidemiological studies state that more than 55% of people with epilepsy have psychiatric disorders. Depression is the most common comorbidity in patients with epilepsy. The purpose of this study is to determine the efficiency of using NDDI-E to diagnose depression in busy urban treatment environments and to determine the risk factors related to depression in this population of patients.
Methodology and Materials
In this study, 100 epileptic patients between the ages of 12 and 18 who are able to answer the questions of the questionnaire and who visited the neurology clinic of Tabriz Children's Hospital between April to September of the 1400, using the easy method of randomized selection were selected. At first, after obtaining permission and briefly explaining the NDDI-E questionnaire for the patient and parents, which includes 6 questions with specialized explanations related to the disease, the questionnaire was given to the patient and the patient answered 6 questions, if the total score is more than 15 the patient diagnosed with depressed, in which case they were referred to a pediatric psychiatrist to confirm the diagnosis and K-SADS-Pl was used. n this 6-questioned questionnaire screening test, which is completed by the patient himself, the patient's mood, ability to concentrate, fatigue, sleep quality, change in appetite and weight, feelings of worthlessness, psychomotor status and suicidal thoughts are evaluated.
Results
NDDI-E test with sensitivity 81.48 %, specificity 95.89%, positive predictive value 88.0 % and negative predictive value 93.33 % is suitable for screening depression in epileptic patients in a busy medical environment. The prevalence of depression in this study was 25%, and except for JME, there was no statistically significant relationship between depression and the studied variables.
