Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a group of chronic metabolic disorders considered a general health problem worldwide. Type 2 diabetes is nowadays the most common type of diabetes throughout the world. Despite the abundance of chemical and herbal medicines in the treatment of diabetes, there is still resistance to treatment. The anti-diabetic effects of boganage plant have been studied in diabetic mice. Goal: The purpose of this study was evaluation of the effect of Eryngium billardieri capsule on blood sugar in type 2 diabetic patients who received oral agents. Materials and methods: This clinical trial research used the randomized method to study type 2 diabetes in 56 patients who took oral medication to lower their blood glucose levels. The patients were divided into two groups, intervention (receiving 1000 mg of extract daily) and control (receiving 1000 mg placebo daily), and were studied for 3 months. Fasting serum glucose, HbA1c, Triglyceride, Cholesterol, LDL, and HDL levels were evaluated before and after the study. The data were analyzed by various statistical methods and SPSS software (version 21), and P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result: At the end of the study, the intragroup analysis demonstrated that the FBS, HbA1c, LDL, HDL, cholesterol, and Triglyceride levels had not lowered significantly in the test group after three months. There was no significant difference in the control group between the data at the beginning of the study and after receiving the placebo. Conclusions: Taking 500 mg capsules of Eryngium billardieri extract twice a day did not have any statistically or clinically significant impact on FBS, HbA1c, LDL, HDL, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in the 56 studied patients.
