Abstract
Among all-natural disasters, earthquakes have the first place in terms of unpredictability and surprise. The unpredictable nature and potential impact make earthquakes one of the most debilitating and deadly disasters, often resulting in widespread casualties and high mortality, with an average of 27,000 deaths since 1990. People die every year due to earthquakes. During disasters, the problems and needs of the elderly may be easily ignored and not prioritized due to their complexity and differences from other age groups. Therefore, the present study was conducted to explain the lived experience of rural elderly living in a tent after the earthquake in the city of Mianeh. Materials and Methods: For this purpose, a qualitative descriptive approach was used. The key elements of qualitative research reporting standards (SRQR) were used in the research design. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with potential and eligible participants using purposive sampling with maximum diversity. The data were analyzed using conventional content analysis techniques. Results: Data saturation was achieved through semi-structured face-to-face interviews of 16 participants in earthquake-affected villages and inside tents. A total of 17 interviews and observations formed the data of this study. In addition, informal interviews during observations were also recorded as data. The average age of the 16 elderly participants in this study was 70 years with a range of 60-81 years. The four main classes extracted from the present study were failure to meet basic physiological needs, inadequate management of government support, helplessness and struggle for survival, and loss of life authority. The main themes extracted included psychological quality of life and provision of basic needs (disabilities-inefficiencies).
