The effect of incorporation the Bioactive Glass on the properties of the Mineral Trioxide Aggregate: (phase 2: setting time & antibacterial properties)

Introduction:
Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is considered as an ideal material in many endodontic procedures. The long setting time and low antibacterial activity against some microorganisms are the main disadvantages of MTA. Previous studies have shown that the addition of Bioactive Glass(BAG), a highly bioactive material with remineralization potential, may improve the properties of MTA. The present study aimed to evaluate setting time and antibacterial activity of MTA mixed with different percentage of bioactive glass.
Methods:
The study was carried out in 3 groups: pure MTA, MTA mixed with 10% BAG and MTA mixed with 20% BAG. The antibacterial activity of experimental groups on E.faecalis was evaluated by Direct contact test method using 96-well microtiter plate for three houres. The setting time was tested according to ISO 9917-2007.
Results:
The setting time was reduced by addition of bioactive glass to MTA and the reduction was more remarkable in 20% BAG/MTA . Incorporation of bioactive glass into MTA improved the antimicrobial activity of MTA against E.faecalis
Conclusion:
The BAG-added MTA has reduced setting time and increased antibacterial activity against E.faecalis which would be an advantage in its clinical use.
