Abstract
Introduction and purpose: Drug prescribing is one of the most powerful and common treatment tools available to doctors, and the implementation of an electronic prescribing system in the health system of countries can provide countless opportunities for more effective and useful prescribing. Identifying the challenges of the electronic prescribing system from the point of view of referring patients, as well as determining the factors that play a role in the occurrence of problems in electronic prescribing, can be useful in order to improve and solve the problems of this system. Research method: This research was conducted qualitatively and through a phenomenological approach with the aim of identifying the challenges of the electronic prescribing system from the perspective of patients referred to the specialized and sub-specialized clinic of Taleghani in Tabriz in the summer of 1401. The data collection tool in this study was a semi-structured questionnaire and the method of data collection was an interview with the referrals to a specialized clinic using a semi-structured questionnaire. Findings: The challenges found in the implementation of the electronic prescribing system in the present study were categorized into 4 areas of errors related to prescribing and reading prescriptions - training - cost and infrastructure. In the meantime, the biggest problem of electronic prescription is related to the wrong prescription of drugs with a frequency of 31% and inaccuracy in the final registration of the prescription by doctors with 28%. The most common reason for visiting and using the prescription system in this clinic was related to heart diseases and to receive pregnancy care for women. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that electronic prescribing, in parallel with all the advantages that this system has compared to the manual prescribing system, also brings problems and some of the problems are very frequent and cause more costs to the patients and the health system itself. Therefore, in order to solve these problems and challenges, the cooperation of all the stakeholders of this system is necessary to create a suitable environment for the creation of electronic health information infrastructure and integration with the electronic health record.
