Abstract
Abstract Introduction: The prevention and management of pain in infants should be the goal of professional health care workers and family members should receive training in this matter. In order for parents to play an active role in managing infant pain; They need to learn about pain complications and pain relief techniques. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of comparing the effect of training using the educational booklet method and role playing on the knowledge and understanding of mothers' self-efficacy in managing newborn pain: a semi-experimental study. Methods: The present study is a semi-experimental type. 111 mothers who were eligible to be included in the study were randomly assigned to three control groups and a role-playing group. In the control group, routine ward trainings were received, and these trainings were oral and included general information about soothing the baby, such as hugging and non-nutritive sucking with the mother's finger, and in the first intervention group, in addition to routine care, mothers were given an educational booklet. given. This educational booklet included content on the definition of pain, signs of pain in infants, management methods in infants, and especially common non-pharmacological methods in pain management (skin-to-skin care, non-nutritive sucking, sucrose, and breast milk). In the second intervention group, in addition to routine care, educational content was taught to the mother through role-playing in two sessions of one and a half hours. For this purpose, individual meetings were held with the coordination of the mother and according to her wishes at the baby's bedside. For a better understanding of theoretical topics such as pain symptoms in babies, images were used. Result: The comparison of the changes in knowledge levels and self-efficacy in the field of pain management in mothers in the three groups of role playing, educational booklet and control indicated that the difference was significant after the implementation of the support program (P<0.05). Conclusion: The results indicated that the implementation of the role-playing training program and training manual for pain management by mothers was effective and there was a significant difference between the average level of knowledge and self-efficacy within the group.
