Background:
Autonomy is one of the most important components of nursing and professionalization is not possible without achieving independence. Critical thinking is an essential part of clinical decision-making and professional competence. However, according to the existing studies, the relationship between these two variables is not clearly defined. Based on this, the present study was designed and implemented with the aim of explaining the status of critical thinking skills and job autonomy among nurses and the relationship between these two variables.
Material and methods:
The current research was a descriptive correlational study in which the relationship between the two variables of job autonomy and critical thinking was determined. After obtaining the necessary permits from the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery of Tabriz and the Vice-Chancellor of Research and Technology of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences and the Ethics Committee of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, the researcher while visiting 4 teaching hospitals Imam Reza, Children, Nikukari and Al-Zahra and introducing himself and his goals research and obtaining written and informed consent from the participants in the study, starting to collect data by completing the Breaugh job autonomy and California Critical Thinking Skills questionnaires and by using stratified random sampling among working nurses. In teaching hospitals affiliated to Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, in 4 centers of Imam Reza, Children, Nikukari and Al-Zahra. According to Morgan's table, the sample size was considered equal to 338 people, taking into account the effect of the 1.2 design, the final number of samples was calculated as 405 people, and the results were analyzed after entering the data in SPSS version 22 was analyzed.
Results:
According to the results, nurses' critical thinking scores had a significant relationship with nurses' job autonomy scores with a correlation coefficient of 0.8 with 95% confidence and a significant level (P-value <0.05). Also, the results of linear regression analysis showed that critical thinking has the ability to explain 0.645 of the variance of job autonomy in a significant way. The critical thinking variable could significantly predict the changes in nurses' job autonomy scores.
Conclusion:
Critical thinking is one of the effective factors in promoting job autonomy in the field of nursing, which can provide the basis for achieving high ability in decision-making, clinical judgment, implementation of independent nursing care for the patient, increasing self-confidence, job autonomy of nurses and ultimately improving the health level of the society.
