Effect of Premedication with oral clonidine on hemodynamic status of patients under thyroidectomy

It is important to maintain hemodynamic stability in the patient's thyroidectomy. Studies have reported that during thyroid surgery, hemodynamic instability can be attributed to episodic increases in thyroid hormones (thyroid storm) and stimulation of the carotid sinus baroreflex. Adequate control of hemodynamic parameters in patients undergoing thyroidectomy is one of the objectives anesthesia management. In this context, we investigated the efficacy of clonidine in the pre-operative control of systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressures, and heart rate (HR), when these medications are used in the immediate pre-operative period
Methods: Patients in operation room of Imam Reza hospital will be randomly divided into two groups according to the random number table. The intervention group received 0.25 mg clonidine and the control group received the same amount of placebo half an hour before surgery. The patient's hemodynamic status was recorded before anesthesia, after intubation, during surgery and recovery. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS software version of Windows 22.
Results: The results of the study showed that in the clonidine group, systolic (SBP), diastolic (DBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) heart rate (HR) decreased significantly after induction of anesthesia and after intubation up to 90 minutes after surgery, as well as in recovery. Also in the present study in the clonidine the duration of surgery was significantly reduced. (P = 0.01).
