The effect of motivational interviewing on dental plaque index of adolescentes with bipolar mood disorder

Abstract
Introduction: Considering the importance of oral health, and considering the special conditions of patients with bipolar mood disorder, the use of medications that cause dry mouth, as well as the effect of oral health on over all health and adolescent self-confidence, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of motivational interviewing technique on changing oral health behavior to finally choose the best method in the field of education and preventive interventions to take a small step in helping to ensure oral health in these teens. Material and methods: In this clinical trial, 60 patients with bipolar mood disorder aged 12 to 18 years with a diagnosis of child and adolescent psychiatrist were selected. Initially, patients were examined by a dentist and dental plaque index were measured and recorded. All patients were trained in regular oral health training then they randomly divided into two groups: case and control. after one week, they were examined again and dental plaque index were measured and recorded. The control group were examined twice with a one month interval by a dentist who was blinded to the groups and dental plaque index were measured and recorded. The case group was participated in 2 sessions of oral health training with MI technique. After one month they were examined again and dental plaque index were measured and recorded. Then, the information obtained in relation to the plaque index of both groups at the beginning and end of the study were compared by analysis of covariance and reviewed. data were analyzed by SPSS 24 software. A probability value less than 0.05 were be considered as a significant level. Result: In the case group, the plaque index decreased by 31.16±14.95% and had significantly more changes than the control group with a decrease of 20.33±9.09%. (P value > 0.05). Conclusion: The reduction of plaque index in adolescents with bipolar mood disorder with motivational interviewing training is significantly more than traditional training.
