Mothers' knowledge and attitudes, staff of health education centers and health care providers about milk bank and milk donation in Tabriz, 1399
Introduction: Children who cannot receive breast milk from their mothers for any reason, the next preferred option is to use another child's breast milk (milk donation). Milk bank is a new, safe and optimal initiative in this field. The knowledge and attitude of influential groups in the process of milk donation play a vital role in the success and sustainability of Milk Bank.
Research method: This study is a descriptive-analytical study that was conducted with a sample size of 634 mothers and 535 medical workers and qualified health care workers in Tabriz city. 634 mothers with children under one year of age who visited health centers in Tabriz for primary care were selected. In this research, sampling of mothers was done in a multi-stage cluster. 535 qualified nurses and midwives working in Al-Zahra and Taleghani hospitals and qualified health care workers of Tabriz health centers (57 centers) participated. The sampling method of this group was the full enumeration method. The data collection tool was a demographic information questionnaire, a knowledge questionnaire, and a questionnaire related to the attitudes of mothers, medical center employees, and health care providers regarding milk donation. After ensuring the willingness of all the aforementioned groups, written informed consent was obtained and the aforementioned questionnaires were completed. Pearson correlation tests, independent t, one-way analysis of variance and adjusted general linear model were used to determine the relationship between variables.
Findings: The average (standard deviation) knowledge score of health care workers and health care workers was equal to 12.04 (4.30), mothers equal to 9.73 (2.89), from the range of obtainable scores was 0-22. The average (standard deviation) score of the attitude of the employees of medical centers and health care workers was 134.27 (20.23), mothers was 134.4 (9.75), from the range of obtainable scores 42-210.
Conclusion: mothers of children under one year old do not have good knowledge about milk bank and milk donation; However, according to the relatively favorable attitude of mothers, it seems that there is a culturally and religiously suitable background for the development of human milk banks in Iran. Regarding the employees of medical centers and health care workers, they had a moderate level of knowledge and attitude towards milk donation and milk banks, which necessitates the development of health education programs regarding milk banks and milk donations, focusing on the government's policies towards milk banks and the process. It calls for safe milk preparation both at the academic level for staff, comprehensively and focused during pregnancy and after for mothers, and at the general level for other community stakeholders.
