Abstract
Introduction: Retirement can be frustrating for both the retirees and their spouse, who are not yet ready for this fundamental change and can lead to changes in behavior and incompatibility. Some studies have shown that there is a relationship between communication skills and adjustment, but in our country, this relationship has not been studied among the elderly. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine predictability of couples' communication skills on intermarriage compatibility after retirement
Method: This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in the years 1399-1400. The subjects were retired elderly men and their wives. The sample size was 316 subjects (158 couples), who were included in the study by multi-stage random selection. The data collection instruments included demographic questionnaires, Communication Skills Questionnaire by Queendom, Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory, and Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS). Data were analyzed by ANOVA, Paired-Sample T-Test, univariate linear regression, and block regression were performed in SPSS version 26 software.
Result: The average age of The subjects were (64.74±5.035) for men and (57.5±6.86) for women. The results indicated that the mean score of marital adjustment and mean score of communication skills were 104.58
and 108.69. The block regression results showed that Among the communication skills, the skill components of receive and sending messages (β=0.15, P=0.014) and conflict resolution skills (β=0.15, P=0.014) were able to predict compatibility between couples. Also, among the individual and social factors, the components of the employee's job, the number of children between 1 and 3 people, regular coordination of bedtime and sometimes sleep time coordination had the ability to predict couples' compatibility The duration of marriage is less than 10 years and skills combined with determination, doing regular exercise, had the ability to predict inversely
Conclusion: Various factors such as communication skills and some characteristics of personal life affect the adjustment of elderly couples. these factors should be considered important by the organizations involved. organizations should provide communication skills training to their employees and their families before retirement or during retirement to prepare and increase adaptation.
