Outcome of twin pregnancies referred to Al-Zahra and Taleghani hospitals in the second trimester of pregnancy and comparison of pregnancy outcomes in dichorion and monocurion twins
Abstract
Twin pregnancies are associated with a higher risk of adverse maternal, fetal and neonatal outcomes than singleton pregnancies. The chorionic type of twin pregnancies can also be associated with the risk of pregnancy consequences. However, not enough studies have been conducted in this regard in the country so far. The aim of this study was to investigate the outcome of twin pregnancies in the second trimester of pregnancy and compare them between monochorionic (MC) and dechorion (DC) twins.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 74 twin pregnancies (37 cases of MC and 37 cases of DC) referred to Alzahra and Taleghani Hospital in the second trimester of pregnancy. Maternal information such as age, BMI at the beginning of pregnancy, and graviditis were collected by the midwife in charge of the clinic at Al-Zahra and Taleghani hospitals. Reported fetal chorionic status was recorded by ultrasound. Then, mothers were monitored and followed up in the clinic during pregnancy (once every two weeks). Fetal, delivery and neonatal outcomes were recorded for each case.
Results: The results showed that there was no significant difference between age, BMI at the beginning of pregnancy, number of pregnancies and parity in mothers of MC and DC groups (all cases P> 0.05). Gestational age at termination of pregnancy, and neonatal birth weight in MC group were significantly lower than DC group (P <0.05). The incidence of maternal complications in pregnancy and the incidence of NICU neonates in the MC group were significantly higher than the DC group (P <0.05). There was no significant difference between MC and DC groups in terms of type of delivery, type of maternal complications in pregnancy, incidence of TTTS syndrome, incidence and type of fetal complications, and infant mortality rate (all cases P> 0.05).
