Abstract
Dialysis patients are at high risk for infection because of impaired immune system function. On the other hand, the presence of a catheter in these patients provides the basis for biofilm formation, which leads to bacterial resistance to phagocytes and antibiotics. The aim of current study was to determine frequency of resistance to carbapenem in Enterobacteriaceae isolated from dialysis patients. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data about 71 dialysis patients admitted to Imam Reza Hospital in Tabriz, including culture results, antibiogram, age, sex and underlying disease in the period 1397 to 1398 were extracted by using HIS and evaluated by SPSS software version 21. Results: The mean age of patients in this study was 63.8 years and 59.2% of patients were female. The majority of culture and antibiogram results were from patients’ urine samples (71.8%). Diabetes mellitus was the most common comorbid disease in the patients in the study, so that it was present in 83% of patients. Enterobacteriaceae was isolated in 73.2% of patients, of which Escherichia coli was the most common with 84.6%. The frequency of CRE among the samples in this study was 13.5%. There was no significant difference between the two sexes in terms of the frequency of CRE (P = 0.63). The mean age of patients with CRE was not significantly different from other patients (P = 0.42). No significant difference was observed between the frequency of CRE in individuals with different underlying diseases (P <0.05).
