Epidemiologic status of Influenza disease in patients admitted to hospitals of Tabriz University of medical sciences during 2015-2016
Abstract
Influenza is an acute respiratory disease caused by influenza viruses and involves upper and lower respiratory tract. It often comes with signs and systemic symptoms such as fever, headache, and weakness. Epidemics of varying extent and severity occur almost every winter. We reviewed Epidemiologic status of Influenza disease in patients admitted to hospitals of Tabriz University of medical sciences during 2014-2015.
Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. The aim of this study was to determine the epidemiologic status of influenza in patients admitted to Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in the years 2014-2015. The initial clinical symptoms of patients entering the emergency room, the results of laboratory tests and PCRs were recorded to check the type of influenza.
Results: The mean ± SD age of the patients was 44.15 ± 25.09 years, the highest age was 83 and the lowest was the twenty-day-old baby. The most common habitat is in the urban area. The mean ± SD of onset of symptoms was 5.53 ± 6.19 days in hospitalized patients that highest incidence was 30 days before admission and the lowest was related to the onset of symptoms during admission. The mean ± SD of hospital admission days was 5.71 ± 5.90 days in the hospital, with a maximum duration of 30 days and the lowest of one day. Only 4 (%10) patients died during the first hours of the visit. Of the patients studied, 30 (%75) of the patients had previous history of the disease. The highest frequency was related to hypertension and History of heart disease in patients. In the frequency of influenza-specific isolates by PCR, 14 (%35) patients with H3N2 influenza, 25 (%62.5) were infected with H1N1, and only one (%2.5) had influenza type B.
