Abstract
Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic disease that affects the smooth muscles in various organs in the digestive system, including the biliary system. So far, limited studies have been performed on gallbladder function in patients with this disease. The aim of this study is evaluation of the gallbladder evacuation and measure the criteria of gallbladder Doppler ultrasound using real time ultrasound in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. materials and methods: In this case-control study, 34 people (18 patients and 16 healthy controls) participated. Gallbladder function was studied in both groups before and after meals using Real Time ultrasound. Gallbladder volume, wall thickness and gallbladder emptying fraction, and superior mesenteric & cystic artery resistance index were measured in case and control groups. Results: There was no difference in fasting gallbladder volume between case and control groups (25± 8.8 vs 30 ± 9.6, P> 0.05). Residual gallbladder volume was lower in patients than healthy individuals (11 ± 6 vs. 17 ± 6.16, P <0.05) and gallbladder EF was higher in patients (0.56 ± 0.13 vs 0.43 ± 0.14, P <0.05). Gallbladder wall thickness was higher before and after meals in patients (P <0.05). Absolute rate of cystic artery resistance index was not different in patients and controls (P> 0.05) but decreased in patients after eating (P <0.05). The absolute resistance index of the superior mesenteric artery in the fasting state was lower in patients than in healthy individuals (0.81 ± 0.06 vs. 0.85 ± 0.43, P <0.05) But after eating, the measured values did not differ between the two groups (P >0.05). Also, the resistance index of the superior mesenteric artery was not different in the group of patients before and after eating (P> 0.05), But in the control group there was a significant decrease (P <0.05).
