Abstract
Title: Implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of educational multimedia package in the field of biomedical ethics for nursing students
Purpose and background: In order to identify and deal with ethical challenges and provide comprehensive care to patients in their future roles as nurses, nursing students must have a high level of awareness, sensitivity and moral reasoning. On the other hand, with the break out of the Covid-19 pandemic, the lack of access to effective virtual programs, especially in the field of practical ethics education, was felt more, so the present study was conducted with the aim of implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of educational multimedia package in the field of biomedical ethics for nursing students.
Materials and methods: The current research is a quasi-experimental study of before and after type. The samples were students of the second semester of Bachelor of Nursing with Nursing Ethics and Professional Communication Unit in the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. According to the estimated sample size with G.Power software, 40 eligible students were selected to enter the study using available sampling method. The pre-test was conducted virtually using the moral awareness questionnaires (Mohajal Aghdam et al.), moral sensitivity (MSQ: Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire) and moral reasoning (Crisham's Nursing Dilemma Test) questionnaire. Then, the designated educational program (electronic teaching of course topics using the educational multimedia package of the four principles of biomedicalethics) was implemented virtually and online. Two weeks after the implementation of the educational program, a post-test was conducted to measure the knowledge, sensitivity and moral reasoning of nursing students using the same questionnaires.
Findings: The findings of the research showed that the average scores of all three variables of awareness, sensitivity and moral reasoning of the students increased after the intervention. The difference between the scores before and after the intervention was significant in the variable of sensitivity and moral reasoning (p-value<0.001), but this difference was not significant in the variable of moral awareness (p-value=0.058).
Conclusion: The results of the study showed the positive effect of the education using an educational multimedia package in improving the awareness, sensitivity and moral reasoning of nursing students. Therefore, the educational multimedia package can be used as a substitute or supplement for traditional education in teaching the principles of professional ethics for nursing students.
