long term effects of corneal penetrating injury in children
Abstract
Eye trauma is a common cause of eye injury. Injuries to the eye usually cause unilateral blindness in children; Due to the different epidemiological features of pediatric eye trauma in different parts of the world and the specific characteristics of each region that require proper planning for preventive measures, we decided to evaluate cases of penetrating eye trauma in patients under 13 years of age. Until 2016, they underwent corneal surgery and repair and had referred to the ophthalmology clinic of Tabriz Nikukari Hospital.
materials and methods. After approval by the Regional Committee on Bioethics of Human Research, patient information such as age, sex, unilateral or bilateral injury, type of ocular injury (symmetrical conjunctiva-sclera), trauma device, recorded in the data collection form. Based on the information in the file, first the initial form was filled out and then the results of the eye examination recorded in the file were collected. Patients' information was entered and analyzed in SPSS 22 software. All statistical tests were performed at a significant level of 5%.
Results. In the present study, the files of 96 patients were included. Trauma occurred due to the impact of sharp objects in 46.2%, kitchen appliances in 34.6%, glass in 11.5% and 7.7% of play equipment; The study of the relationship between visual acuity and age and causes of trauma did not reveal a significant relationship between these variables (P = 0.057, r = 0.198 and P = 0.284, r = -0.126, respectively)
