The effect of saffron enema on the activity of ulcerative colitis Parisa Rostami Rad

Abstract

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease whose treatment is based on anti-inflammatory therapy. Saffron is a substance with anti-inflammatory properties that its positive effects on colitis in animals have been confirmed, but no human studies have been conducted in this field. In this study, we investigated the effect of saffron enema on the activity of ulcerative colitis. Methods: During this study, 32 patients with ulcerative colitis were randomly divided into two groups and one group received saffron solution enema for 4 weeks and the other group received saffron dye solution enema for 4 weeks. Patients' swimsuit scores were calculated before and immediately after the study. And Mayo scores of both groups and its sub-components were compared in the group. Results: According to p value <0.001, there was a significant difference in reducing the score of Mayo and its components before and after the intervention in the group receiving enema, but the difference was not significant in the group receiving placebo. The response rate to treatment in the group receiving saffron enema was one, ie all patients receiving saffron enema responded to treatment and mucosal improvement was one in four patients.
