Effect of Nasogastric Tube Insertion on (Nausea, Vomiting and Pain) after Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is an ideal and low risk method for removing a patient's gallbladder. There is no consensus on whether nasogastric tube (NGT) implantation can reduce the severity of nausea, vomiting, and pain from laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of NGT implantation on nausea, vomiting and pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Materials and Methods: A descriptive comparative study was performed to compare the severity of nausea and vomiting and the severity of postoperative laparoscopic gallbladder surgery pain in patients with and without NGT. A total of 209 patients undergoing laparoscopic gallbladder surgery in the male and female surgical wards were admitted to the study by considering the inclusion criteria by sequential sampling method from April 6 to September 6, 2021. Numerical pain scale (NAS) and QoR-15 recovery quality questionnaire were used to collect data. SPSS 24, independent and paired t-test and Chi-square were used to analyze the data. Finding: The findings demonstrated that the intensity of nausea and vomiting decreased in the group with NGT insertion after the surgery (6.77±1.63 vs 1.95± 4.37, p≤001), but there was no significant difference in the group without NGT insertion (4.86±1.94 vs 1.88±5.34). While there was no significant difference between the pain intensity of patients in the two groups before LC (2.20±7.10 vs 1.91±7.53, p=0.135). But in the postoperative stage, patients in the NGT implantation group (1.69 ± 1.77) experienced less pain intensity than the group without NGT implantation (2.10 ± 9.97) (P≤0.05. Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, NGT implantation can be recommended to reduce the severity of nausea, vomiting and pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients.
