Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is a set of metabolic disorders including abdominal obesity, high fasting blood sugar, dyslipidemia and hypertension; In various studies, this syndrome has been associated with an increased risk of various types of cancer and malignancies; In this study, we examined the association between metabolic syndrome and seven types of gastrointestinal cancer, including cancer of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, bile ducts, colon, and rectum. Methods: The method of this systematic review study is based on the PRISMA checklist and the studies were obtained by searching international databases including: PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE, Web Of Science, Science Direct and Scopus. After reviewing the inclusion and exclusion criteria, additional studies have been omitted. The remaining studies were evaluated for quality using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Results: In the involved studies, a significant association was reported between metabolic syndrome and cancers of the biliary system, rectum, pancreas and liver, a contradictory association with gastric, colon and esophageal adenocarcinoma and no association with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
