Evaluation of isolated malignant cells and their ratio to papillary structures in fine needle aspiration of papillary thyroid carcinoma in relation to capsular invasion and lymph node metastasis

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation between cytological patterns of papillary thyroid carcinoma in fine needle aspiration and aggressive behavior of tumor in postoperative histopathology specimens.
Materials and Methods: In this retrospective descriptive analytical study we studied 43 patients diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma in the last 6 years who had thyroid surgery specimens as well as fine needle aspiration before the lesion surgery were available in the Tabriz Imam Reza hospit hospital. FNA samples revised to evaluate relation between cytological patterns and aggressive behavior such as thyroid extra capsular invasion and lymphovascular invasion or lymph node metastasis in postoperative specimen.
Results: There was significant difference in isolated cells, pseudoinclusions, syncytial cell groups and large pleomorphic nuclei between the groups throughout the study, so that these cases are more accompanied by thyroid extra capsular
invasion and lymphovascular invasion or lymph node metastasis.
