Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of selenium on thyroid hormone and anti-TPO antibody. Methods: A total of 52 patients with subclinical hypothyroidism were selected and divided into two equal groups. In the intervention group, 200 micrograms capsules containing selenium were administered and in the placebo group, capsules containing placebo were prescribed. In both groups, TSH and Anti-TPO antibody levels were measured before the intervention and two months after the start of treatment and were compared between the two groups. Results: The mean decrease in TSH in the intervention group was -10.98±33.31 and in the placebo group was -3.20±38.36%, which despite the further decrease in the intervention group, this difference was not statistically significant (p=0.48). Also, the mean increase of Anti-TPO Ab in the intervention and placebo groups was 109.81±51.49% and 173.17±96.26%, respectively. In this case, despite a slight increase in anti-TPO levels in the intervention group, the observed difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.56).
