Abstract
Introduction: Mouthwashes are one of the methods to control and reduce problems such as accumulation of microorganisms and plaque in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. Although the use of mouthwashes protects against bacteria, different mouthwash types can have different effects on bond strength. Since the success of fixed orthodontic treatments depends on the bond strength of the brackets on the enamel, the aim of this study was to investigate the possible effects of Sensi Kin mouthwash on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets on the enamel surface. Methods and Materials: This experimental study was performed on 40 healthy extracted permolar (20 in mouthwash group and 20 in control group). All teeth were immersed in 0.1% Thymol solution for 7 days, then kept in 4 ° distilled water for less than 3 months. In the mouthwash group, Sensi Kin mouthwash was applied to the teeth twice a day, for 1 minute each time, for 1 month. The teeth of both groups were removed from the retention solutions for bracket bonding and finally the shear strength of orthodontic brackets on the enamel surface was measured by Universal Testing Machine. Results: The results showed that the mean shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets in the Sensi Kin mouthwash group was 117.8 (36 – 387) N (about 9.06 MPa) and in the control group was 121.6 (40.3 – 473.3) N (about 9.35 MPa). There was no significant difference between the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets between Seni Kin and control mouthwash groups (P = 0.914). Conclusion: Considering that Sensi Kin mouthwash does not reduce the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets, so this mouthwash can be used during orthodontic treatments.
