The survey of body mass index, total and segmental body composition in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and their relationship with clinical severity – a case-control study

Abstract
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a medical condition caused by pressure on the median nerve that extends beyond the carpal tunnel into the wrist. The main symptoms of the disease are pain, numbness and numbness in the first three and a half fingers. Symptoms often present as pain, drowsiness, and tingling in the fingers, and in the advanced stages are accompanied by atrophy of the tendon muscles and muscle weakness in the hands. Due to the high prevalence of carpal tunnel in the community and some of its risk factors such as obesity, high BMI and diabetes, and the lack of a similar study in this field, we decided to determine the body composition of people with mild, moderate and severe CTS. And compare with the body composition of healthy people without CTS. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, 50 patients with CTS and 50 controls were selected. in this study, patients with numbness, pain and numbness in the fingers of fingers 1, 2, 3 and the outer half of finger 4 who were referred to the physical medicine and rehabilitation department of Imam Reza hospitals for EDX within a year and their CTS was registered and inclusion criteria They entered the study after obtaining written consent. In the CTS group, patients were first evaluated by a rehabilitation resident and completed a Boston symptomatic and functional questionnaire. Results: According to the results obtained from patients with CTS, the average age of patients is about 47.32 years, of which 80% were female and 20% were male. The weight of patients was about 83.7 kg and the BMI of these patients was 33.64. According to the results and the comparison of patients with CTS and patients who were healthy, the percentage of total body fat in patients with CTS, SLM and MBF arm, body fat, MBF and SLM was significantly higher than the healthy group. Mean BMI had no significant relationship with symptom severity subgroups. In the study, no significant relationship was found between mean BMI and mean Boston overall score, performance score and severity score.
