Evaluation of the protective effect of pumpkin seed oil on oxidative hair damages
چکیده
Introduction: Pumpkin seed oil (PSO) contains many nutrients and antioxidant and exhibits medicinal and therapeutic properties. PSO contains Vitamin A, Vitamin K, Vitamin B7 and omega3 and thus is effective in maintaining hair growth and health. Due to the composition and structure of PSO, it can be considered as a suitable candidate used to protect hair and reduce oxidative damage.
Purpose: Evaluating the effect of pumpkin seed oil in reducing the oxidative damage to hair as a pre – treatment.
Method: Hair tresses without any coloring history was selected and divided into 3 groups: G1; Hair tresses damaged by oxidant. G2 & G3; Hair tresses treated by pumpkin seed oil and subsdequentley was cleaned by physical removal of oil from the hair surface before oxidation; G2 and or by washing method before oxidation; G3. First, Antioxidant activity of pumpkin seed oil was measured by 2, 2-Diphenyl–1– picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. ATR spectrums were collected for each tresses. Quantitive studies of protein-loss method was done using Lowry method.
Results: The amount of Protein loss in all oil treated group decreased remarkablely. ATR spectrums revealed that the oil was remained and successfully tracked even after washing process. Four peaks showd significant change after oxidation procedure and the trend was a linear line. RC50 amount was measured as 49.40 (μg/ml).
Conclusion: Pumpkin seed oil was effective in decreasing the oxidative hair damage caused by oxidant. The introduced ATR proceducure was able to show the damage in chemical structure of the hair and the results were in accordance with the Protein loss method. ATR method is simple and faste compared to protein-loss test and can be utilized in similar studies.
