Investigation of the validity and reliability of child to parent aggression questionnaire and the social determinants of child to parent aggression
Abstract
Child-to-parent aggression is a public health issue in the communities. The aim of this study is the determination of validity and reliability of 10-item questionnaire of child-to-parent aggression (CPA). This tool can be used as a useful screening tool to assess the presence of child-to-parent aggression, or as a follow-up measure after an intervention.
Methods and materials: This research is an observational study. In first step the forward and backward translation of the original version of CPA questionnaire was conducted. Its validity was assessed by face method. Intraclass correlation coefficient t (ICC), test-retest, and Cronbach’s alpha method were used to measure its reliability. In total, 258 adolescents of 12-18 years, filled out the Persian version of child-to-parent aggression questionnaire (CPAQ). And their parents filled out Persian socioeconomic status (SES) questionnaire. The SPSS 16.0 for Windows was used for data analyses and P<0.05 was considered as statistically significant.
Results: Cronbach’s alpha was 0.83 for father’s questionnaire and 0.66 for mothers. ICC was 0.812 and 0.879 for aggression questionnaire against fathers and mothers, respectively. The prevalence of psychological violence against mother or father was 79.9% and was 13.5% for physical violence in all participants. Sever psychological violence was 16.1% and 4.0% for severe physical violence. No statistically significant relationship between SES and types of child against parent violence was observed.
